Pop icon Robbie Williams has announced he is excited to perform at the “biggest sporting event in the wold” as the AFL pulled off a coup.

The AFL has announced Robbie Williams will headline the pre-match entertainment at the 2022 AFL Grand Final.

The league has pulled off a coup in bringing the pop icon back to Australia in September for the first grand final to be held at the MCG since 2019.

Williams confirmed the news in a video shared by the AFL.

“I am so excited to be performing for all the fans, on the hallowed turf of the MCG, for the biggest game of the year,” Williams said.

“I can’t wait to see you all on the last Saturday in September, performing at the greatest sporting event in the country. Nay, the world.”

The 48-year-old says he will be hand-selecting his band to play the stadium set.

Williams appearance at the MCG comes after two years where the grand final entertainment has been dominated by local artists as a result of Covid-19 restrictions.

Last year’s grand final at Optus Stadium in Perth was headlined by Baker Boy, Eskimo Joe, and John Butler.

The 2020 grand final in Brisbane was headlined by Sheppard, Andrew Stockdale, and DMA’s.

AFL chief executive Gillon McLachlan said in a statement: “We are back at the MCG, back in front of 100,000 fans, and no better performer than Robbie Williams to help amplify the atmosphere ahead of the biggest sporting event in the country.”

Williams joked in the video he may be interested in replacing McLachlan as boss of the AFL if he enjoys the show.

“If it goes well, I might even put my hand up to be the next CEO of the AFL,” he said of McLachlan, who is quitting the AFL at the end of the year.

Williams recently performed at Rod Laver Arena across two nights in April and May, as part of filming for his upcoming biopic ‘Better Man’.

The League’s manager of commercial and customer Kylie Rogers said in the statement released by the league: “Robbie Williams is considered one of the world’s greatest showmen and to have him perform in the Telstra pre-game entertainment, along a with a cast of Australian acts to be announced shortly, will be the perfect way to open the 2022 Toyota AFL Grand Final”.

The Grand Final will be played on September 24.
