Australian paceman Mitchell Starc has pulled off arguably the best catch of his career, holding onto an “outrageous” return chance during the second T20 against the West Indies in Brisbane.

Needing 179 for victory at the Gabba, the West Indies run chase got off to a horror start with opener Kyle Mayers chipping a low full toss back towards Starc in the opening over.

The tall left-armer, still in his follow-through motion, somehow managed to bend over and pluck the white Kookaburra from his ankles — it was a seriously impressive piece of athleticism from the 197cm bowler.

Return catches are difficult, particularly for pace bowlers, but Starc made it look easy.

“What a catch from Mitchell Starc,” former Australian all-rounder Brendon Julian said on Fox Cricket commentary.

“That is unbelievable.”

Former Test wicketkeeper Brad Haddin continued: “It’s great reflexes by Mitchell Starc.

“He’s got a great set of hands Starcy.

“That’s very hard to do … outstanding piece of athleticism there!”

Starc’s demolition was far from over — he removed West Indies captain Nicholas Pooran in the ninth over for 2, with Australian skipper Aaron Finch taking a sharp catch at mid-wicket.

And a few overs later, veteran all-rounder Jason Holder miscued a pull shot towards Cameron Green at the mid-wicket boundary rope, giving Starc his third wicket of the evening.

Starc then secured his maiden four-wicket haul in T20 internationals with a searing yorker that knocked over Odean Smith at the death.

The New South Welshman finished with career-best figures of 4/20 from four overs as Australia clinched a 31-run victory to seal a 2-0 series whitewash.
