Lewis Hamilton has given his own fans a surprising directive ahead of what is set to be an unpredictable British Grand Prix.

Welcome to news.com.au’s coverage of the British Grand Prix at Silverstone.

Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz will be chasing his maiden F1 race win after he claimed his first ever pole position in qualifying.

He will be joined by championship leader Max Verstappen on the front row of the grid, while the second row is occupied by Charles Leclerc and Sergio Perez.

Lewis Hamilton will start from fifth and is chasing a 11th podium at his home race, which would be a record for the most podiums at a single event.

The Brit looms as a serious threat to Red Bull and Ferrari but if he doesn’t win, it will be Hamilton’s 11th consecutive race without a victory – the longest streak of his career.

Verstappen was booed after qualifying second, but Hamilton urged the British fans not to jeer his rival.

“I think we’re better than that, so I would say we don’t need to do booing,” he said.

“But we’ve such great fans and our sporting fans, they feel emotion up and down.

“I definitely don’t agree with booing. We don’t need to do that. We should be here pushing everybody.

“It doesn’t make a difference when you boo someone. They’ve already made the mistake or whatever it is, but I really do appreciate the support I have here — and maybe some of them are still feeling the pain from last year so, either way, I appreciate it.”

Daniel Ricciardo will start from 14th on the grid after a disappointing performance in qualifying.

Rain is forecast for the start of the race, which is scheduled to start at midnight (AEST).
