A Caitlin Foord double has lifted the Matildas to a 3-1 victory over Denmark to wrap up their two-game European tour.

It was a less than ideal start from Tony Gustavsson’s side, as they found themselves behind on the scoreboard after just 47 seconds with Denmark’s Karen Holmgaard slotting past Teagan Micah.

The score remained the same throughout the first half despite the best efforts of the Matildas in the final third who seemed to just lack the cutting edge required to fire past Danish goalkeeper Lene Christensen.

The Matildas were perhaps counting their lucky stars as halftime neared when Sofie Bredgaard’s deflected effort cannoned off the crossbar.

But the second half proved to be an entirely different story as the Matildas flipped the game on its head in the space of a blistering nine minutes.

Foord bagged the equaliser in the 66th minute when the Arsenal forward’s striker deflected off Danish skipper Simone Boye Sorensen and into the net.

The second arrived thanks to the Matildas’ high pressing as they won the ball just outside the Danish 18-yard box before Katrina Gorry scored a screamer from outside the area in the 74th minute to hand the visitors the lead.

Just two minutes later, Foord got her second of the evening as she buried a chance created from midfielder Kyra Cooney-Cross’ bursting run, with the goal doubling up as her 25th for the Matildas.

It was a fine performance from Gustavsson’s side and gifted the coach some much-needed breathing space after a disappointing run of results.

The victory over Denmark was also the Matildas’ first over a team in the top 20 since a win over Brazil in Sydney in October last year, as the Aussies look to continue their momentum ahead of the 2023 Women’s World Cup on home soil.
