Tarryn Thomas’ future at North Melbourne is in doubt after the grieving midfielder struggled to find the football in the loss against Adelaide.

Thomas – who had a family member pass away during the week – had only three disposals and looked disinterested at times during the contest at Blundstone Arena on Sunday.

According to RSN host Gareth Hall, the 22-year-old is unlikely to be at North Melbourne next year despite his contract not expiring until the end of the 2024 season

Thomas also took out his frustrations on a social media troll, who took aim at the youngster and his effort against the Crows.

“You managed 1 handball for the whole first half today, let’s see if we can change the future and aim for 2 in the second half,” the troll said.

Thomas responded with: “Still get paid 10x more than you ever will,” before deleting the comment.

North Melbourne coach David Noble provided much needed context to the reason surrounding Thomas’ performance and disappointment, saying the pick eight wasn’t doing too well following the passing of a family member.

“Obviously I didn’t hear the halftime stuff but Taz [Tarryn] has had a bereavement in his family this week and has really struggled,” Noble said in Sunday’s press conference.

“His Nan passed away and so he’s struggled a bit and wanted to play for his Nan and I’m sure he’s disappointed with the game he put forward.”

The youngster has averaged 13 touches, three tackles and three clearances in his 10 outings in 2022 and has struggled at the senior level.

Thomas’ struggles has been the focus of commentators and ex-players, with David King believing the young Kangaroo has lost love of the game.

“He just doesn’t look like he’s got the ability to explode or release onto the ball,” King said.

“He’s just shifting around at the moment … you just wonder what’s going through his mind at this stage. He looks a fraction disinterested.

“What we’ve seen today has been a player that’s completely disinterested in this game of football. That’s a harsh comment, but I’ve watched him closely.”
