Sam Kerr’s global superstardom has gone to another level, with the Matildas captain the first female footballer to grace the cover of the most popular football computer game on the planet.
Kerr, who had a stunning season with Chelsea that included netting the Golden Boot award, is on the cover of FIFA 23 Ultimate Edition alongside French superstar Kylian Mbappe.
The cover, reserved for the biggest names in the game, with the likes of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo gracing it in previous years, came with a caption of “Two phenomenal forces upfront. One ultimate strike partnership” in a social media release.
The two players are in their club kit; Chelsea for Kerr, Paris St Germain for Mbappe, who featured on his own on the front of the 2021 and 2022 issues of the game.
While other female stars have been on the cover of local editions of the game, including Kerr’s Matildas teammate Steph Catley, who was on the cover of the Australian version of FIFA 16, no woman has previously been on a global edition.
The game has sold an estimated 350 million-plus copies since it was first launched, with annual editions usually racking up around 30 million in sales and is widely played by sporting stars of all codes.
Kerr is back home in Perth and was presented the keys to the city for her outstanding achievements at both club and international level in 2022.
The national captain has scored 56 goals in 108 appearances for her country and will lead the charge at the women’s World Cup being held in Australia and New Zealand in 2023.
