Australian tennis star Nick Kyrgios has always been known for his behaviour on and off the court, enthralling spectators by his questionable and unforgettable antics.

From his elite talent to his mood swings, to comments made about rivals, Kyrgios has always divided public opinion.

There’s no doubt that when he entered professional tennis in 2013 he had the ability to cause upsets and make top-end moves that would see him reach No.13 in 2016.

Who is Costeen Hatzi? Nick Kyrgios’ partner

However, since December 2021 – the confirmed time for when girlfriend Costeen Hatzi started dating Kyrgios – there has been a change in his behaviour.

The 2022 tennis year was arguably his best, winning the Australian Open doubles competition with friend and teammate Thanasi Kokkinakis as well as making the Wimbledon final.

Kyrgios also won three other titles at ATP level, putting together the fourth-best winning percentage in singles on the men’s tour (37-10).

Only World No.1 Carlos Alcaraz, No.2 Rafa Nadal and No.5 Djokovic had a better strike rate in 2022.

As a result of his impressive stretch last year, Kyrgios was in contention but narrowly beat for the Newcombe Medal – highest award in Australian tennis – by Ash Barty.

The 27-year-old gave credit to girlfriend Hatzi’s presence in his life, saying it helped him focus.

“None of this could have been done without her,” Kygrios told AAP in December.

“It’s been a very successful year, not only on the tennis court but just in general. I’m feeling really, really good about everything and just enjoying life.

“And meeting Costeen was probably my favourite moment, probably the best thing that’s happened to me – and the year I’ve had as a highly motivated and highly pushed player, has been because of her. That’s been my favourite experience.

“I just feel happier off the court, really just trying to be happy off the court – and that shows up on the court too. She’s just the best thing ever and just makes me feel amazing, believes in my tennis and believes in me off the court too. We have such a good relationship.”

Now looking toward the 2023 season, Kyrgios is keen to continue his impressive run from last year with the support of his girlfriend which begins January 16 in Melbourne for the Australian Open.

Playing in front of a home crowd, the sky is the limit for Kyrgios, who is more than capable of claiming his first Grand Slam.

“I’m training well, enjoying it, mentally feeling good. That’s all that really matters,” Kyrgios said.

“Whether I go in there and win the [Australian Open] or lose first round, I’m the same person. I’m taking it day by day, I’m a day-by-day person. I’m not thinking ahead at all.”

However, ‘King Kyrgios’ has had an interrupted run into the first Grand Slam of the year, pulling out of the United Cup less than 24 hours before as well as the Adelaide International.

He will however get some match practice in prior to the Australian Open as he faces Djokovic in exhibition match.

Tennis Australia boss Craig Tiley confirmed that the duo will play on Friday night (January 13).

Tickets will be sold for the match, with all proceeds going to charity.
